Healthy Children - The Healthy Future of Mankind
It seems like we must be very careful about the things we buy for our children. The foods they eat and the clothes they wear can be decisive factors for their growth. Terms like organic and eco-friendly are part of the hottest topics right now in the world. Products that do less harm to us can affect them greatly, because the immune system of children is still in the development phase.
The main concerns regarding products for children are these: knowing what to buy and understanding what to avoid. While the quality of some items may justify their higher price, others should probably be left on the shelves. Organic standards are constantly updating and this can be confusing for some people. Until things become less foggy, it can be better to focus on the things that can be done for providing a clean environment for your children, an environment that is free of toxic agents. One of the first measures to take is to make sure the bedding children use is a healthy environment for them.
Only Use Healthy Bedding for Your Children
Before anything else, healthy bedding ensures a healthy sleep. Organic beds with Oeko-Tex and IVN certified fabrics can be ideal, as they are healthy and comfortable. Regular blankets and sheets for newborns and toddlers have dangerous chemicals in their materials, such as formaldehyde. A clean bed is not enough, as the bed must be clean and healthy at the same time. Sometimes the substances used for cleaning can contain toxic chemicals, fragrances and ammonia. Instead of using commercial cleaners, find nontoxic or biodegradable products, as they are safer and sometimes even more effective.
Personal care is very important in the way that you have to keep it simple. Sometimes warm water with a washcloth can be enough. If you still have to use soaps and shampoos, try to get mild soaps and shampoos that have no fragrances. The products you use should be hypoallergenic, with a few simple ingredients. Your children’s room has to be painted using a type of paint that doesn’t have a high content of volatile components. You need to find paint with low volatile organic compounds (VOC) or without any VOC.
The room must constantly be aired. This can be achieved through ventilation or by simply opening the windows to let some fresh air inside. An air purifier can filter the air, trapping dust particles and allergens. Furniture can also be painted in VOC paints. You should only buy low VOC furniture or furniture that has water-based finishes. Steer clear from materials that release toxic fumes into the air. The toy that your children play with should not contain polyvinyl chloride (shortly PVC). Toys should be simple and made of washable materials, preferably with a natural wood finish.
How to Build Healthy Bedding for Your Baby
A healthy bed can be built in this way: you will begin with the dust-mite encasement, then put the mattress in place, cover it with the waterproof mattress pad and add the fitted sheet. The sheet needs to look like it is a perfect fit for the bedding. In case you have a bumper, you need to keep in mind a few safety measures. The bumper should be tucked between the side of the bed and the mattress, with just a few inches left out. In many stores and magazines, you can see that the bumper is gently placed on top of the mattress, but this is not the best approach. If you do it right, you can get more fresh air for the child and there will be less likely for the hands and feet to become trapped between the mattress and the bumper. One last thing: don’t forget to secure the bumper so that it doesn’t become loose.
