Earth Day is just around the corner on April 22nd and of course For Your Bug-a-Boo wants to join in the celebrations. Part of our mission is to provide eco-friendly organic and non-toxic baby products. I was curious about the origins of Earth Day and decided to do a bit of online research. I figured that it hasn’t been around that long, maybe since global warming concerns came about, but not as far back as 1970! .
It turns out that a U.S. Senator by the name of Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day. In 1969, Nelson witnessed a huge oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA and felt that somehow the U.S. and the world needed to become more aware of environmental issues and laws needed to be created to protect our Earth. This was also a time of student protests against war and Nelson thought that if he could somehow create the same sort of energy for the environment that he just might be able to get enough attention for actions to take place.
Senator Nelson announced the idea of a “national teach-in on the environment” to the media and got the ball rolling. On April 22nd, 1970, 20 million American held demonstrations all over the country calling for a healthier Earth! This first Earth Day lead to the creation of the EPA and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Amazingly enough, it also brought together Democrats and Republicans agreeing and working together to create these laws!
Celebrate this important day with family and friends. It is a great time to start a family tradition of doing something to help the Earth and is a great opportunity to talk about environmental issues with your kids. After all, they are our future and will be living in an environment that we help create. My son and I started a tradition when he was four years old to pick up litter in our neighborhood. My son just turned 9 and is already talking about going out this year. Since that first day five years ago, he picks up litter when we go for walks and short hikes throughout the year!
